Tremont Residence Brings Affordable Housing to the Heart of the Bronx

One of Westhab’s latest projects, Tremont Residence, held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony this fall. Tremont Residence is a Westhab-run $50.6 million affordable and mixed-income building located in the West Farm area of the Bronx. Built in partnership with developers Slate & Camber Property Groups, the 119-unit building includes both affordable and supportive units specifically designated for individuals with mental health disabilities. Services coordinated by Westhab include case management; job readiness, placement, retention, and referrals; and mental health services. Tremont Residence is set up so that affordable and supportive housing units will be integrated into the heart of the community.

Jose is one of Tremont’s current residents who came to live there after becoming street homeless during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jose was living out of a tent before he entered shelter in July 2021, which he describes as a horrible experience until he interviewed with Westhab. Jose said that immediately upon interviewing for a place at Tremont, he was impressed by the professionalism of the staff at Westhab. He felt a powerful connection to Program Director Valerie Moses. In Jose’s words, “She made me feel welcomed and like she and her staff were going to work hard to help keep me on track. I didn’t feel judged, and they really encouraged me to move forward. I love my apartment, and it is all going so well for me”.

A vacant single-story retail building was demolished to make way for the 11-story residential building. The development’s amenities include a social services office suite for residents, landscaped outdoor recreational space, full-time security, a 1,300-square-foot community room, fitness center, computer lab, reading lounge, bike storage, and laundry rooms.

In a press release, Governor Hochul says, “The completion of this 119-unit development means that dozens of Bronx residents and families will have a safe, stable place to call home and the wraparound services they need to thrive. This project complements our $25 billion housing plan by not only providing high-quality, affordable housing but also creating strong, vibrant, and resilient communities.”

At the end of the day, it’s the professionalism and kindness of our Westhab staff that makes affordable and supportive housing options like Tremont a reality.
