Westhab Needs Volunteers

  1. Working with Youth - Homework helpers and afterschool tutoring at the Coachman Family Center (CFC) in White Plains or the Elm Street Neighborhood Center, (ESNC) in Yonkers.
Fun Activities - we also need chess players, knitters, cooks dancers, musicians, artists, book clubs facilitators and crafty individuals.
    Recreational/Cultural Activities
    - Organize outdoor picnics or sports activities at a local park or take a group of young people to a ball game, concert, or musuem.
Parties & Holidays- Work with staff to bring a cake and other goodies to celebrate collective monthly birthdays or holidays with children.

  2. Working with Adults - Help homeless clients filling out housing applications and making appointments by phone to see available apartments; help adults with career-related activities such as mock interviews, resume writing, workplace protocol.
Job Shadowing - Provide an opportunity for Westhab's clients for a day of shadowing an employee during a typical work day in a business setting. If you own a business or work for a company that can provide a learning opportunity.

  3. Organize Clothing/Product Drives- Organize "drives" at work or in your community for items such as personal hygiene products (shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant) disposable diapers, winter coats and holiday gifts

  4. Holiday Helpers - Help individually or through your civic or religious affiliations to provide meals and gifts for holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving Christmas, & Easter.

  5. Event Planning and Implementation - An extra pair of hands is always welcome at any Westhab event such as Dedication of New Residences, Golf Outings and Cut-A-Thon

  6. Join Advisory Boards/Committees - When openings arise on various committees, members of the community are welcomed to submit their resumes.Westhab has advisory boards at the CFC, in Yonkers, and Mount Vernon. In addition, an active Development Committee is involved in fundraising and events.

  7. Furniture Sharehouse Helpers- The Westchester County Airport is home to a new furniture "sharehouse", a facility which will contain donated furniture and other items. We'll need helpers to "shop" for Westhab clients moving into permanent housing. While at the warehouse volunteers will be needed for cataloguing and organizing merchandise.
